Interferential Current Ability to Change the Pattern of Brain Activity in Patients With Nonspecific Low Back Pain

چکیده مقاله:
Objectives: Chronic low back pain (CLBP), along with physical limitations that affect the quality of life, is one of the most important problems in the health community. The pain causes a wide range of structural, functional, and neurological changes in the brain. However, these changes have not been well studied, as brain changes in other chronic pains. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of patients with nonspecific CLBP, and also to evaluate the effects of interferential current (IFC), as one of the common treatment methods in these patients, on the EEG. Methods: [AT1] This randomized control trial was performed in the Physiotherapy Clinic of Rehabilitation Faculty of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences from July 2021 to February 2022. A total of 20 patients with nonspecific CLBP and 20 healthy individuals participated in this study. Healthy subjects were in the control group, and the patients were randomly divided into two groups: intervention and placebo. Participants' EEG and pain intensity were recorded before and after one session of IFC. Results: The results of statistical analyses to compare the EEG of patients and healthy individuals did not show a significant difference between the two groups. The results of statistical tests to evaluate the effects of IFC on participants’ EEG showed a significant increase in alpha frequency in all three groups. In addition, a significant increase in theta frequency was recorded in the placebo group, and an increase in the beta frequency in the intervention group. Pain intensity showed a significant decrease only in the intervention group. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that changes in EEG in patients with low back pain may be related to the severity of pain and neurological involvement. In addition, the increased power of EEG following the application of IFC may be due to sensory stimulation of the skin surface.[AT2] [C3]

Effects of the carrier frequency of interferential current on pain modulation in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain: a protocol of a randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND Low back pain is an important public health problem that is associated with poor quality of life and disability. Among the electrophysical treatments, interferential current (IFC) has not been studied in patients with low back pain in a high-quality randomised controlled trial examining not only pain, but pain mechanisms and function. METHODS/DESIGN A three-arm randomised controlle...
متن کاملSmall Ball Exercise Program for Patients With Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Purpose: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the main causes of disability in adults. Approximately 80% of LBPs lead to chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP). Damages to back region may be due to weak musculoskeletal structure, impaired muscle or joint flexibility, changes in muscle tone, and reduced strength and endurance. A set of exercises by small ball was designed by the corresponding and f...
متن کاملBrain Wave Patterns in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain: A Case-Control Study
Introduction: Research evidence indicates that maladaptive reorganization of the brain plays a critical role in amplifying pain experiences and pain chronification; there is, however, no clear evidence of change in brain wave activity among patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). The objective of this study was to assess brain wave activity in patients with CLBP, compared to healthy control...

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of core stabilization exercises on low back pain and abdominal and back muscle endurance in patients with chronic low back pain caused by disc herniation. Methods: For this purpose, 30 male and female patients with chronic low back pain due to disc herniation (age =48.55 ± 3.35) were divided into experimental and control groups (...
متن کاملChanges in postural and trunk muscles responses in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain during sudden upper limb loading
Background: Alterations in the neuromuscular control of the spine were found in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Sudden loading of the spine is assumed to be the cause of approximately 12% of lower back injuries. However, some aspects of this problem, such as alterations in the sensory–motor control of the spine, remain questionable. This study investigated postural and neuro–motor...
متن کاملEffects of Cortical and Peripheral Electrical Stimulation on Brain Activity in Individuals with Chronic Low Back Pain
Purpose: Neuroscience studies suggest that Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) is associated with central sensitization, and maladaptive reorganization of the brain; this introduced a new target for LBP treatment. Studies revealed that cortical and peripheral electrical stimulation can be beneficial in regulating brain neuronal activity. However, there is a scarcity of evidence to support the effects ...
